OUTCOMES

  • A refined product/service system model

  • Validated concepts

USING THE TOOL

Business origami is a technique that uses paper cutouts representing people, channels and touchpoints to play out the experiences of using your products or services. It allows you to step back, look at the bigger picture and test different scenarios with stakeholders. It is a great way of presenting your ideas and defining how they should work before actual design and development starts.

  1. Set up the materials: Start by reflecting on the wider systemic context of your product. What is the experience of using your product? Who is your design bringing value to? Cut out pieces of paper and label key characters, channels of communication and important locations.

  2. Create the interaction system and present to stakeholders: Place the key elements onto the map and establish connections between them. Consider their relationships, interactions, value and money exchanges. Draw and label arrows to represent these. Use this model to present to users and stakeholders.

  3. Identify gaps and refine: Can you identify any shortcomings in the system? Based on feedback, add missing elements and move things around until you are happy with the outcome.

Tips

  • Try to build this tool into a co-creation session with stakeholders to be able to derive multiple ideas with maximum impact

  • While this is a great tool to present and validate concepts, you may also use it in the research phase to map out existing systems and identify gaps.
